Eventbrite - SCL NY Seminar: An Evening with Michael Starobin: The Art of Orchestration

Michael Starobin, one of the most sought-after orchestrators on Broadway today, has worked with many of the leading composers in musical theater, including Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Flaherty, Alan Menken, Tom Kitt and William Finn. He will present examples of his work for film and stage, revealing some of his distinctive techniques, sharing his thoughts about collaboration, and discussing the new "small" band orchestration used in shows like Next to Normal (the second of two Pulitzer Prize-winning shows Michael has orchestrated). Topics may also include the difference between Hunchback's 65-piece film orchestration and the 14-piece La Jolla production, his own composition work, and how Sunday in the Park with George required a re-examination of the role orchestrations play in musical theater, and a new use of synthesis in a Broadway pit.

The evening will be moderated by SCL Board Member Greg Pliska, and hosted by Dr. Ronald Sadoff, Associate Prof. and Chair, NYU Steinhardt Dept. of Music & Performing Arts Professions Director, Film Scoring and Songwriting.
