Mentor Program

The SCL Fall 2010 interns (from left to right) Luigi Pulcini, Evan Goldman, Jason Schimmel and Ken Jacobsen met at John Rodd¹s studio for his workshop "How to avoid common technical mistakes in scoring."

THE SCL MENTOR PROGRAM is designed for composers of underscore for film, television and/or video games based in Los Angeles.

Fall 2011-Winter/Spring 2012 Terms

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED:
Applications for the Fall 2011-Spring 2012 Terms MUST BE POSTMARKED by MONDAY, JULY 25th, 2011. NO PERSONAL DELIVERIES.

Qualification for admission to the intern program requires that the applicant be a current SCL ASSOCIATE Member without the credits necessary to qualify for Full membership in the SCL, AND residing in Los Angeles for at least three months before the beginning of the semester AND throughout the semester.  Applicants who pay at the SCL Associate Member level, but actually qualify for the Full Member level will be considered INELIGIBLE for this program. No exceptions.

No campaigning or soliciting by or on behalf of the applicants is permitted.

All SCL Mentor-Intern Program activities take place in the Los Angeles Area. All selected applicants should reside in the Los Angeles area for the duration of the internship, preferably for at least three months before starting their internship and for six months after finishing their internship.

The intern is expected to provide independent means of economic support as this is an unpaid learning experience.  The intern is advised to have flexibility within their outside employment in order to provide the flexibility required to attend scoring sessions and other appointments and opportunities as they get scheduled depending on what films and television shows are being produced during their particular term.

During the course of the three month program, the interns have the opportunity to interface extensively with working film and television composers who generously volunteer their time and expertise to introduce the interns to the profession of film scoring.

Previous shows observed have included: the STAR TREK series, JAG, THE SIMPSONS, and SEVENTH HEAVEN and various films. Activities include sitting in on many recording sessions; meetings with major agents, music supervisors and performing rights societies; and spending time one-on-one with one of our mentor composers (including orchestrating and composing practice exercises from the sessions which have been observed).

Throughout the program, the intern will have the opportunity to meet with and observe the role of the music editor, orchestrater, music copyist, scoring engineer, orchestra conductor and performing musicians involved in the various projects.

Interns will be selected to participate in one of two annual terms.  The Fall Term runs from September 1 to December 15.  The Winter/Spring Term runs from January 15 to May 1.

To be considered for admission to the 2011-2012 SCL Mentor Program, please send the following to the SCL, POSTMARKED by MONDAY, JULY 25th, 2011:

  1.   One DVD up to 10 minutes in length of original scoring samples (strongly preferred), or if no example of scoring to picture is available, then one CD of original music no longer than 10 minutes in length.

  2.    A typewritten statement no longer than one page (must be on 8-1/2" x 11" paper), indicating what the applicant hopes to gain from the intern/mentor experience, as well as the applicant's goals as a film/television composer.

  3.   A second typewritten statement outlining your education and composing experience (like a resume) must be on 8-1/2" x 11" paper, including previous internships and workshops.

Please be sure to mark each item clearly with your name, and up-to-date mailing address, email address, and phone number. If you have them, please be sure to include your website URL, Facebook listing, MySpace listing, etc. Following review of these materials, finalists may be asked for an in-person interview (held in Los Angeles in August).
