Omnisphere, Spectrasonics' flagship synthesizer, is known as one of the most powerful and best-sounding virtual instruments on the market. Featuring over 12,000 sounds and an extremely flexible synthesis engine, Omnisphere has long been a formidable weapon in the media composer’s arsenal.

In this seminar,  Spectrasonics sound designers Jonathan Merrill and Ignacio Longo will teach you to discover, dissect, and diagnose the elements of any Omnisphere sound and how to quickly customize it to fit your music. In addition to covering Omnisphere's basic concepts and straightforward ways to approach the interface, they’ll explain simple patch modification techniques which allow you to easily create unique sounds for your projects. You’ll learn lots of practical, quick, and simple methods for getting under the hood—making you more of a power user and speeding up your workflow.
The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: DEMYSTIFYING OMNISPHERE - Jonathan Merrill Jonathan Merrill

Synthesizers quickly became one of Jonathan Merrill's many objects of fascination when, as a young boy, his father showed him the portamento feature on his giant Moog modular! While still a composition student at USC, this preoccupation landed him the job as sound designer for Garry Trudeau’s satirical musical, "Rapmaster Ronnie,” and eventually led him to join the sound design team at Spectrasonics.

Alongside his work with synthesizers, Jonathan has composed the music for scores of commercials, including Mercedes, Budweiser, and Disney, as well as music for TV, film, and new media. He has produced a diverse roster of performing artists and licensed songs and instrumental music extensively in TV and film. You’ve seen Jonathan conduct orchestras with Guns N’ Roses and Elton John and he teaches conducting to film scoring students at UCLA Extension. He has performed and recorded at venues ranging from the Hollywood Bowl to the Montreux Jazz Festival, with artists including Gustavo Dudamel and Danny Elfman, and he recently sang on Michael Giacchino's score for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

After years in the conservatory and working as a pianist/keyboardist around the Buenos Aires scene, he earned a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music, where he earned degrees in Composition and Music Synthesis. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, where his diverse music interests led him to produce and remix a variety of artists, compose and collaborate on film scores, and work as a programmer for Roland.
