Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of 18th century Georgian London, Harlots is a powerful family drama offering a brand-new take on the city’s most valuable commercial activity – sex. Based on the stories of real women, the series follows Margaret Wells and her daughters as she struggles to reconcile her roles as mother and brothel owner. When her business comes under attack from Lydia Quigley, a rival madam with a ruthless streak, Margaret will fight back, even if it means putting her family at risk. The series premiered on Huluon March 29th.

Harlots is written by playwright and screenwriter, Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre, Tamara Drewe) and based upon an original idea by Buffini and Alison Newman. Harlots is from Monumental Pictures, the new indie was founded by Oscar nominated producers Alison Owen (Suffragette) and Debra Hayward (Bridget Jones’s Baby, Les Misérables). Rael Jones created a boldly anachronistic score which combines heavy electronica and rock, reflecting the present along with the tense experiences and rebellious nature of the women depicted in the series.

Playful and light yet simultaneously dramatic, the score appropriately sets the backdrop for the female driven dramedy. Rael Jones contributes an original modern score which brings a contemporary interpretation to the period drama, complete with electric guitar riffs and forceful drum cadences that underscore the passion of strong, tenacious characters living in a world often enveloped in dire consequences. In keeping with the bold and adventurous subject matter, the surreptitious and sexy composition provided by Jones seamlessly lends itself to each scene while keeping viewers compelled by the story.
