The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: Good Time - Brian Reitzell Brian Reitzell

Since 1999, when he exploded on the scene with Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and music supervisor Brian Reitzell has been on a mission to elevate the layer that music adds to a film's life. Creating his own unique method of scoring films, Brian draws equally from his experience as a recording and touring musician with bands such as Redd Kross and Air, and his massive knowledge of recorded music.

Acting as both music supervisor and composer, Brian blurs the lines between score, source music, and sound design. His vision is to create a seamless landscape of songs, score, and found music for each soundtrack. Brian’s explorations of new sounds add unique character to visual images. He often has instruments custom built or even invented for individual film scores and wholeheartedly embraces the Brian Eno philosophy of the recording studio as his instrument. Brian collaborates regularly with musicians outside the traditional Hollywood film composer network, working with some of today’s most acclaimed musical artists including Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Air, Richard James (Aphex Twin), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), Britt Daniel (Spoon), Explosions In The Sky, and Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine).

Brian's past films include The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation (for which he received a BAFTA award nomination), CQ, Friday Night Lights, Stranger Than Fiction, Thumbsucker, Marie Antoinette, The Brothers Bloom, 30 Days Of Night, Beginners, Red Riding Hood, and The Bling Ring and the TV series Boss. His work has also appeared in the films The Kite Runner and Juno. Brian’s video game credits include his critically acclaimed score for THQ’s Red Faction: Armageddon and Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs. In 2014, he released his first solo album, Auto Music, featuring collaborations with Shields and James. Brian scored and music supervised all three seasons of the critically acclaimed NBC series Hannibal, whose series finale included “Love Crime”, a song he co-wrote with the song’s performer Siouxsie Sioux. He also provided a swirling electro-acoustic score to the Focus Features film Kicks, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016.

His most recent project – Starz’s American Gods – is based on the popular Neil Gaiman novel, with Bryan Fuller and David Slade producing. Both the series and score (featuring vocals from Debbie Harry of Blondie and Shirley Manson of Garbage) have been met with critical acclaim.

Brian works and resides in Los Angeles.
