Selected Screenings

The panel will feature 3 episodes of the DreamWorks Television animated shows Dinotrux (score by Jake Monaco), DreamWorks Trollhunters (score by Tim Davies), and All Hail King Julien (score by Frederik Wiedmann).

The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: Composing Tunes for Children's Toons - Jake Monaco Jake Monaco is a multi-talented composer whose music strengthens many projects across film and television.  Jake’s music was most recently featured in Fox’s action comedy Keeping Up With the Joneses starring Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot, Isla Fisher, and Zach Galifianakis and Fox Searchlight’s comedy Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie starring Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley.  He is also currently scoring three family-favorite animated series, enriching the worlds of Amazon’s The Stinky and Dirty Show, Netflix’s Dinotrux, and Warner Bros. Animation’s Be Cool Scooby Doo.

Jake has scored projects spanning a multitude of genres, including classroom comedy (Struck by Lightning), romantic drama (Kilimanjaro) and murder mystery (Out to Kill). Most recently, Jake composed the score to Vertical Entertainment’s Playing It Cool starring Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan, Universal’s Kindergarten Cop 2 starring Dolph Lundgren, and Warner Bros.’ A Cinderella Story: If The Show Fits, and   He also co-composed the music for Fox’s Let’s Be Cops, starring Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr, President Obama’s re-election film, The Road We’ve Traveled, narrated by Tom Hanks, and arranged, orchestrated and produced Piper, a hit Pixar short that earned an Oscar nomination this year.

In addition, his musical fingerprints can be found on some of the biggest film scores of the past decade. As a producer and composer of additional music for Christophe Beck, Monaco has contributed to the animated magic of Frozen, the record-breaking laughs of The Hangover trilogy, the furry hijinks of The Muppets, and the real-life drama of Waiting for Superman.

Monaco grew up in New Jersey and New Hampshire, and as early as 2 years old, preferred the band pit to the clowns and animals at the circus. He studied composition and music technology at the University of Richmond in Virginia, where he also started the band NE3 and opened for hit groups like Maroon 5. He met his mentor, Christophe Beck, through his time as a student in the film-scoring program at USC. After graduation, the pair began fruitful and ongoing collaborations.

“I’ve always loved storytelling through music, which is why songwriting came so naturally,” says Monaco. “I found it difficult to conjure up inspiration for a piece just for the sake of writing music. So when I finally made the connection between music and film, it just clicked and I fell in love.”

The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: Composing Tunes for Children's Toons - Tim Davies Tim Davies is an in-demand composer, working on many projects including with two-time Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla on the score to the Fox animated film The Book of Life. This was also the beginning of a relationship with producer/director Guillermo del Toro, which led to writing additional music for Crimson Peak. Most recently, Davies is scoring del Toro's his new animated TV show, Trollhunters, produced by DreamWorks Animation Television for Netflix, which premiered to widespread acclaim, and earned Davies his first Annie Award nomination.

Tim Davies is also one of the busiest conductors and orchestrators in Hollywood. His recent film and TV credits include Minions, Ant-Man, Empire, The Peanuts Movie, Frozen, The Book of Life, Edge of Tomorrow and La La Land. He has conducted and orchestrated numerous video game scores, such as the God of War and Infamous series, The Last of Us, and both Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight. In 2015 he made his concert stage debut conducting Pokemon: Symphonic Evolutions with the Baltimore Symphony.

Davies is an active arranger as well. Recent highlights include arranging and playing drums for the twentieth anniversary concert of NAS’ Illmatic and being lead arranger for Kendrick Lamar’s recent performance of To Pimp a Butterfly, both featuring the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. He has written arrangements for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and The Netherlands Metropol Orkest. In the pop and hip hop world he has arranged for albums by chart-topping artists Amy Winehouse, Akon, Miguel, and Cee Lo Green. He plays drums and writes for his own group, the 18-piece Tim Davies Big Band, and received Grammy nominations in 2010 and 2017.

The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: Composing Tunes for Children's Toons - Frederik Wiedmann Emmy® Award-winning composer Frederik Wiedmann has compiled an interesting and varied résumé, with over 40 titles to his name encompassing all genres of film and television. Wiedmann is currently composing the music for two animated series (All Hail King Julien, Miles From Tomorrowland), has become a mainstay in the DC animated universe, and continues to score dramatic feature films.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Wiedmann has been inspired to film composition since he first heard John Barry’s score for Dances With Wolves at the age of 12. Wiedmann attended the Berklee College of Music to learn the craft before moving to Los Angeles.

In 2007 he scored his first feature Return To House On Haunted Hill (produced by Joel Silver) and in the ten years since, his résumé includes horror films like The Hills Run Red, Hostel Part III, Mirrors II, The Damned and Intruders.  His dramatic work can be heard in the epic civil war drama Field Of Lost Shoes (directed by Sean McNamara) and Paul Schrader’s recent feature Dying Of The Light (starring Nicolas Cage and Anton Yelchin).

In 2016 Wiedmann earned his first Emmy Award for “Outstanding Original Song” (with lyricist Mitch Watson) on the song “True Bromance” for the Dreamworks Animations series All Hail King Julien.

Twice Wiedmann has collaborated with DC mastermind Bruce Timm, first on Green Lantern  - The Animated Series (which earned him 2 consecutive Annie nominations) and later with his twisted take on Batman, Superman and Wonder Women in Justice League - Gods And Monsters.  He has also composed the music for DC Animation’s made-for-DVD movies Justice League - The Flashpoint Paradox, Son Of Batman, Justice League - Throne Of Atlantis, and WB’s latest Batman TV Series Beware The Batman.
