The SOCIETY OF COMPOSERS & LYRICISTS invites each SCL member and one guest to join us at 7:00p.m. on Wednesday, October 16th, 2002, for a full-length screening of Todd Haynes' "Far From Heaven," made available by FOCUS FEATURES. Composer Elmer Bernstein and writer/director Todd Haynes will discuss the film and answer questions from the audience, followed by a reception.

Elmer Bernstein has written music for more than 200 major motion pictures including "To Kill A Mockingbird," "The Magnificent Seven," "Sweet Smell of Success," "The Great Escape," "Trading Places," "The Age of Innocence," and "Bringing Out the Dead." In recent years, Bernstein's distinguished scores have included "My Left Foot," "The Grifters," "Devil in the Blue Dress," "Hoodlum," John Grisham's "The Rainmaker," "Wild Wild West," and the HBO presentation of "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" starring Halle Berry. Bernstein marked his 50th anniversary as a feature film composer in 2001.

Todd Haynes credits include "Poison," which won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature Film at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival; "Safe," starring Julianne Moore which screened in the Directors Fortnight section of the 1995 Cannes International Film Festival; and "Velvet Goldmine," which premiered as an Official Selection of the 1998 Cannes International Film Festival and earned Haynes a Special Jury Prize for Artistic Contribution.

The second teaming of two-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore with writer/director Todd Haynes and producer Christine Vachon following the acclaimed 1995 drama "Safe," tells the story of a privileged housewife in 1950s America, and is inspired by the great Hollywood "women's films" of that era. A Focus Features and Vulcan Productions presentation of a Killer Films/John Wells/Section Eight production, the film stars Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia Clarkson, and Viola Davis.
