SCL Seminar EXOTIC FLAVORS: A Practical Guide to Writing for Ethnic Instruments featuring John Bilezikjian on the Oud

Event: SCL Seminar EXOTIC FLAVORS: A Practical Guide to Writing for Ethnic Instruments featuring John Bilezikjian on the Oud
Date: April 10, 2003
Time:
Location: AFM Local 47 Hall

Through performance and discussion, this seminar will feature the unique instrumental mastery of JOHN BILEZIKJIAN on the OUD.

The Oud is an exceptionally beautiful Middle-Eastern instrument dating back some 2,500 years to its origins in Persia. It has 11 strings, no frets, and is played with an eagle's quill. The Oud is the predecessor of both the Guitar and the Lute.

John Bilezikjian may be the most prominent Oudist of his generation, if not in the nation. He is also a highly respected teacher, composer, artist, and musician. Although Mr. Bilezikjian's main focus is the Oud, he is a multi instrumentalist, and over the past 30 years, he has written and performed music for television and film. He has also developed the first electric Oud, which he will demonstrate along with the traditional instrument.

Please join us for a fascinating evening of music as we explore this amazing instrument with detailed explanations of the tunings, performance techniques, and notation. Helpful handouts will be provided.
