THE SOCIETY OF COMPOSERS AND LYRICISTS presents the continuing Seminar Series EXOTIC FLAVORS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO WRITING FOR ETHNIC INSTRUMENTS "THE MUSIC OF INDIA"

Through performance and discussion, this seminar will feature the unique instrumental mastery of: HASU PATEL, Sitar; ABHIMAN KAUSHAL, Tabla; and DAVID PHILIPSON, Bansuri (bamboo flute).

Join these distinguished panelists - all world-class musicians, composers, and teachers in a fascinating presentation of traditional and contemporary Indian music styles. Having collaborated with everyone from Ravi Shankar to Phillip Glass, Tito Puente, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, these performers will demonstrate the theory and techniques behind composing for each instrument. Helpful handouts provided.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Hindu Temple serves lunch from 11am-2:30pm. Come by the temple early and enjoy authentic Indian food for only $2 per person.

DIRECTIONS TO THE TEMPLE: From any major freeway in Southern California: connect with the 101/Ventura Freeway heading Westbound towards Ventura. Exit from the 101 in Calabasas at the "Las Virgenes Road/Malibu Canyon" exit. (From the East, take a left at the end of exit ramp onto Las Virgenes Road heading towards Malibu; from the West, turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto Las Virgenes Road heading towards Malibu.) Continue on Las Virgenes Road as it crosses Mulholland Highway; proceed 1/2 mile past Mulholland Highway, and turn left into Las Virgenes Canyon Road. The Temple entrance will be on your right hand side.

From PCH/CA-1 northbound: turn right at the intersection of PCH and Malibu Canyon Road (Pepperdine University campus) onto Malibu Canyon Road. Malibu Canyon Road becomes Las Virgenes Road in 4.6 miles, as you cross Malibu heading into Calabasas. Continue for 1.1 miles, and turn right onto Las Virgenes Canyon Road; the Temple will be on your right hand side. (If you cross Mulholland Highway, you've gone too far.)
