Born in Pasadena, California, Richard Bellis (son of a theatrical agent mother and a music educator father) began his show business career as a child actor. Working in movies (notably the sci-fi classic Them!) and television (from Cheyenne to Batman) until the age of 12, only to turn all his attentions toward music and leave acting behind. Within months of graduating from high school, he became musical director for the touring version of the popular TV rock n roll showcase Shindig, leading the band for such 60s stars as Bobby Sherman, the Dixie Cups and Gerry & the Pacemakers. This was followed by a stint as conductor for Johnny Mathis and 10 years of arranging and conducting for many Las Vegas headliners.

At the age of 30 Bellis left the road and began scoring films on a full time basis. Since that time, he has scored over 36 films and has received an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Music Composition for the score of Stephen King's IT, an ABC Miniseries, and Emmy nominations for HBO's Doublecrossed & ABC's Double, Double, Toil & Trouble. Bellis is also one of a handful of composers responsible for the attraction music at the Walt Disney theme parks.

In addition to his film scoring career, Bellis is a past president of the Society of Composers & Lyricists; conducts the Film Scoring Workshop for ASCAP on an annual basis, served on the faculty of the University of Southern California for eighteen years in the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program, lectures at the University of California at Santa Barbara and has served on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
