Brian Ralston to teach a class in the UCLA Extension film scoring program.
SCL composer Brian Ralston will be teaching the Mus 482.4 Electronic Composition for Film and Television course in the UCLA Extension film scoring certificate program beginning this Fall 2011. The course is designed for aspiring and working composers who wish to gain an understanding of the creative and technical practices that constitute professional scoring specifically for electronic equipment and instruments. Cues are scored at home using a personal workstation and critiqued in class. Participants acquire practical skills and experience as well as a deeper understanding of aesthetic choices by studying the various stages of cues from recent films and television shows, before and after the addition of original score. But, the course syllabus states that while the foundation of this course and its assignments are a focus on composing music for various scenes in various compositional styles using only one's electronic and sampled gear at home, they will also explore a comprehensive approach to the entire scoring process from beginning to end. Including but not limited to spotting, analyzing a scene, communicating with a director, the composing process, midi manipulation, audio mixing, proper delivery requirements (stem creation), and cue sheets. The 4 credit class will be held on Saturdays this Fall from Noon to 4pm on UCLA's campus. See the http://www.uclaextension.edu website for further information. |
