Multi-Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Composer) grew up in New Rochelle, New York and developed an interest in music at an early age. He studied piano and violin through his high school years, but it wasn't until after his graduation from New York University with a liberal arts degree that he decided to focus on a career in music. At this time, Menken was working primarily as a songwriter who performed frequently in local clubs and had an active career writing and singing commercial jingles. Several shows that he had written had become successfully showcased, but had not yet been produced. His first collaboration with Howard Ashman was in 1979 on the WPA production of "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," which later went on to be well-received in its off-Broadway debut. In the area of recording, both sound tracks from "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" have been certified for double platinum sales with "Aladdin" very close to triple platinum.

The song "Beauty and the Beast" scored high on the charts in the top ten. The song "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin" reached the number one position on the charts. The "Pocahontas sound track was certified triple platinum and the single of "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams was number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart and number four on the Pop Chart.

Menken's other musical stage credits include a collaboration with Tom Eyen on "Kicks: The Showgirl Musical," a musical adaptation of "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz," with David Spencer and such revues as "Patch, Patch, Patch," "Diamonds," " Personals," and "Let Freedom Sing." His most recent stage musical was "Weird Romance," which has just been released on Columbia Records. In 1983, he was the recipient of the BMI Career Achievement Award for his impressive body of work in the theatre.

Menken's other film credits include the 1992 Disney live-action musical, "Newsies," and the song "Measure of a Man" for "Rocky V," which was performed by Elton John. He scored a four hour documentary on Abraham Lincoln for ABC and produced an album of selections from "Lincoln" on Angel Records. He also contributed a song for "Home Alone II: Lost in New York."

Menken and his wife Janis, a former professional ballet dancer, reside in upstate New York with their two children.
